Join us. And help give brain cancer a run for its money.

We’ve done our best to make the third annual 5K Richard’s Fun Run something you’ll never forget. So, whether you’re a runner, a sponsor, a volunteer or just a cheerer-on, here’s what you need to know about our third annual fun run for brain cancer.

The course will be the same as last year:

The race will begin at the gate above the Chestnut Orchard at Cataloochee Ranch. From there, the route will lead into The Bowl, an expansive bowl-shaped open meadow with dramatic long-range mountain views. The trail will lead runners around the perimeter, following the shape of the bowl, before plunging into a thick rhododendron tunnel that opens back into The Bowl.

Next, the trail will wind down towards the “Way Back When” base camp, then onto a shaded gravel road that winds back towards the main Ranch house. The road will climb back uphill through a forest-covered uphill path. Runners will then turn left for the final stretch home. The course will wind around between the horse meadows to come full circle to the finish line at the main Ranch house.

The rewards:

At the finish line, everybody wins. Not only have runners survived one of the hardest 5K courses around, they have also participated in our moon shot effort to end cancer. After the race, lunch will be available for purchase at the Ranch house.

The nitty-gritty:

The race starts at 10 am. Please arrive at least an hour early, by 9 am. Parking will be on your right as you reach the top of the mountain on Fie Top Road. Registration tables will be at The Pavilion, a covered area across from the main Ranch house. The race will be self-timed, so be sure to bring whatever device you prefer. This year, we won’t have all the bells and whistles of last year. But the 5K mountain course, with its challenges and astonishing vista views, will be exactly the same. Registration fee for the 5K Richard’s Fun Run is $10, or $15 the day of race.

The proceeds:

All proceeds benefit the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University.

The Gala:

Our new dinner event is called Richard’s Gala – Cataloochee’s Own Moon Shot to End Brain Cancer. We’re planning a very special gala evening with fine dining, wine, music, and both live and silent auctions, to be held at the main Ranch house and outside under a big white tent. Gala tickets are already sold out, with a waiting list, but you’re welcome to bid online for auction items up until August 4 at 6:00pm. Please view our online auction gallery and submit a maximum bid for that item, and include your name and phone number so we can notify you if you win. Feel free to bid on as many items as you want. And remember: There are no losers here. Because brain cancer research will be the ultimate winner.
